Lorenzo Maitani and Associates, The Resurrection

Circa 1310-31
Relief in stone
West façade, Orvieto Cathedral, Italy

The image follows Mark 16:1-7 faithfully. The three Marys hold the jars of spices they have brought to the tomb. The artist uses the twisting vine and the "stone" support under the sepulcher to indicate that they are inside the tomb, whose stone has been rolled away. The "young man sitting on the right side" points to Heaven and tells them that Jesus "is risen, he is not here."
